Broad-Tailed Hummingbird

Hummingbird

Trochilidae

General appearance

Hummingbirds are small, vibrant birds with iridescent feathers. They are most noticeable for their quick, darting flying style and ability to hover in mid-air. Colors range widely, including greens, blues, purples, reds, and whites, often with a metallic sheen. They possess a long, thin beak perfect for sipping nectar from flowers.

Male vs female

Males are typically brighter and more colorful than females, often with a ‘gorget’ or patch of bright, iridescent throat feathers that females lack. Female hummingbirds have softer, muted coloration for camouflage when nesting. Males are also slightly smaller on average.

Juvenile

Juvenile hummingbirds resemble their mothers in colouring to stay camouflaged. They lack the iridescent throat patch of adult males. As they mature, juvenile males begin to develop more vibrant feathers, particularly on their throats, and by their first winter, most will have at least a few bright feathers indicative of their gender.

How to tell the Hummingbird from the Broad-Tailed Hummingbird

Visual differences

Hummingbirds, varying from 2-10 inches (5-26cm) in size, exhibit diverse iridescent colors, including greens, blues, and reds. Their beaks are long and thin. In comparison, the Broad-Tailed Hummingbird, around 4-4.5 inches (10-11cm), features a green back with rose-colored throats in males and buff-toned green sides in females. They have a distinct notched, rusty-orange tail. Both species have males with brighter plumage than females, but the Broad-Tailed male's rose throat and distinct tail are key differentiators.

Key differences and behavior

Hummingbirds, with over 350 species, are primarily tropical and subtropical, migrating to temperate regions. Diverse in habitats, they also adapt to urban gardens. Broad-tailed hummingbirds, specifically, thrive in high-altitude mountainous forests. Both species perform aerial displays for courtship, but broad-tailed males generate distinct buzzes audible over 250 feet. Nesting behavior involves females constructing nests and caring for offspring alone; broad-tailed nests are often at elevations above 10,000 feet. Diets are similar, focusing on nectar and tiny insects, with both attracted to sugar-water feeders. While broader hummingbird species range significantly in size, broad-tailed individuals typically weigh 0.1-0.14 oz and measure 3.3-3.8 inches long, showcasing more uniform behavior.
