White-Eared Bulbul

Common Bulbul

Pycnonotus barbatus

Also known as: Black-Eyed Bulbul, Brown Bulbul, Brown-Capped Geelgat, Common Garden Bulbul, Garden Bulbul, White-Vented Bulbul

General appearance

The common bulbul, or Pycnonotus barbatus, is a small passerine bird characterized by a compact body, short neck, and long tail. Its primary coloration is a drab brown on the wings and back, transitioning to a lighter shade on the underparts. The bird has a striking black head, complemented by a patch of yellow under its tail and a thin white eye ring.

Male vs female

Males and females of the common bulbul have very similar appearances, making them difficult to distinguish in the wild. Both have the same size and coloration, with no prominent sexual dimorphism. However, during breeding season, male bulbuls often display more aggressive and distinctive behaviors, such as competitive singing and aerial displays.

Juvenile

Juvenile common bulbuls are similar in appearance to the adults, but generally bear a softer, duller coloration. Their feather edges may also be slightly fluffier and less defined than in mature individuals. Over time, as they mature, their coloring gradually darkens to match that of adults.

How to tell the Common Bulbul from the White-Eared Bulbul

Visual differences

The Common Bulbul (6-8 inches, 1-1.7 oz) has a drab brown body with lighter underparts, a striking black head, a yellow patch under its tail, and a thin white eye ring. The White-Eared Bulbul (7-7.5 inches, 0.6-1.2 oz) features a dark grey body, light underbelly, and a distinct white ear patch. It has a white-tipped tail and a lighter throat tuft. Both species have similar sizes and little sexual dimorphism, but key distinguishing features are the black head of the Common Bulbul and the prominent white ear patch of the White-Eared Bulbul.

Key differences and behavior

Common Bulbuls (Pycnonotus barbatus) are known for their prominent singing from high perches, a behavior less observed in White-Eared Bulbuls (Pycnonotus leucotis), which often live in trios during breeding. Common Bulbuls primarily inhabit African woodlands and savannas, while White-Eared Bulbuls are found in South Asia's scrublands and urban areas. Both species adapt well to human-altered environments but White-Eared Bulbuls are often seen in city parks and gardens. In terms of diet, both consume fruits and insects, yet White-Eared Bulbuls show a distinct preference for sunflower seeds and urban feeders. For nesting, both utilize shrubs, but White-Eared counterparts may incorporate more urban elements. Despite their overlapping diets and habitats, these behavioral distinctions help bird enthusiasts differentiate them in the field.
