Bulbul or White-Spectacled Bulbul?
Here's how to tell the difference
Bulbul
White-Spectacled Bulbul
Bulbul
Pycnonotus
Also known as: Nightingale
General appearance
Bulbuls are small to medium-sized songbirds, often distinguished by a unique crest atop their heads. The coloration of their plumage varies greatly among species, but the common colors seen are brown, grey, or white, often with distinctive markings on the chest and belly. They have short necks, long tails, and relatively short and slender bills.
Male vs female
There are no significant differences in coloration or size between males and females of the bulbul species. Both sexes usually have similar plumage. Any difference, when present, can be subtle and often needs careful observation for detection. Furthermore, the mating pairs of bulbuls are often seen foraging together, which can make it challenging to separate the genders visually.
Juvenile
Juvenile bulbuls typically have a more subdued coloration than adults and may lack the crest seen in mature birds. They are often seen in the company of adults and can be distinguished by their earnest, yet less polished, song attempts. As they mature, juveniles will gradually acquire the coloration and distinguishing characteristics of adult birds.

Pycnonotus xanthopygos
General appearance
The white-spectacled bulbul, also known as the yellow-vented bulbul, has a sleek body, average length of 20 centimeters and a wingspan between 20-25 centimeters. It has a black crest, a white spectacled ring around its eyes, and a black stripe across its white cheeks. Its body is mainly greyish-brown with a yellow vent under the tail, thus deriving its other common name. Seasonal changes do not significantly affect its appearance.
Male vs female
Both the males and females of this species exhibit similar physical traits and colorations, making it challenging to distinguish between them based purely on visual characteristics. Their differences mainly exist in their vocalizations, with males having a wider variety of calls for attracting mates.
Juvenile
Juvenile white-spectacled bulbuls lack the pronounced specs and crest of the adults, and have a duller, more uniform brown coloration. The spectalces and crest develop progressively with growth. Therefore, if you spot a bulbul without distinct spectacles, it's likely a juvenile.

Both species show minimal sexual dimorphism, but juvenile white-spectacled bulbuls lack spectacles and the distinct crest, presenting a uniform brown color.
Key differences and behavior
The Bulbul and White-Spectacled Bulbul display distinct behavioral and habitat differences. The Bulbul is often found in pairs or small groups across tropical to subtropical zones, and even in urban areas, showcasing adaptability to various climates. In contrast, the White-Spectacled Bulbul resides mainly in the Middle East and North Africa, inhabiting savannas and gardens. Both species engage in similar nesting behaviors, creating cup-shaped nests and sharing parental duties. However, the White-Spectacled Bulbul forms sibling pairs, highlighting a unique social behavior. Both birds mainly consume fruits and insects, yet Bulbuls are attracted more to fruits at feeders, while White-Spectacled Bulbuls additionally enjoy seeds, reflecting subtle dietary preferences. Vocalization for mating in Bulbuls involves songs and physical displays, whereas White-Spectacled Bulbuls have elaborate courtship displays featuring singing and plumage exhibition.
