White-Spectacled Bulbul or Red-Vented Bulbul?
Here's how to tell the difference
White-Spectacled Bulbul
Red-Vented Bulbul
White-Spectacled Bulbul
Pycnonotus xanthopygos
General appearance
The white-spectacled bulbul, also known as the yellow-vented bulbul, has a sleek body, average length of 20 centimeters and a wingspan between 20-25 centimeters. It has a black crest, a white spectacled ring around its eyes, and a black stripe across its white cheeks. Its body is mainly greyish-brown with a yellow vent under the tail, thus deriving its other common name. Seasonal changes do not significantly affect its appearance.
Male vs female
Both the males and females of this species exhibit similar physical traits and colorations, making it challenging to distinguish between them based purely on visual characteristics. Their differences mainly exist in their vocalizations, with males having a wider variety of calls for attracting mates.
Juvenile
Juvenile white-spectacled bulbuls lack the pronounced specs and crest of the adults, and have a duller, more uniform brown coloration. The spectalces and crest develop progressively with growth. Therefore, if you spot a bulbul without distinct spectacles, it's likely a juvenile.

Pycnonotus cafer
General appearance
The Red-vented Bulbul is a member of the bulbul family of passerines. It is easily identified by its short crest on the head and a characteristic red colour patch on the vent. They are generally around 20cm in length. Their body is primarily black with dark brown mixed in. The head, throat, and crests are black, while the middle of the belly is white.
Male vs female
Males and females appear largely similar with little sexual dimorphism. Both genders flaunt the white belly and red vent patches. Females are slightly smaller and duller than males. It is challenging to distinguish them based on appearance alone.
Juvenile
Juvenile Red-vented bulbuls resemble adults but have less distinctly colored vent patches. Their upper parts are brownish while the belly and under tail coverts are often tinged rust-brown. The head, crest, and throat are not as starkly black, but instead exhibit a mix of browns. Juveniles attain the mature plumage in about one year.

Visual differences
The White-Spectacled Bulbul measures about 7.9-9.8 inches in length and features a distinctive white eyering, black crest, and yellow vent against a grayish-brown body. In contrast, the Red-Vented Bulbul is around 7.9-9 inches, sporting a black head, throat, and crest with a red vent and dark body. Its belly is notably white. Both species have similar sizes, but the eye ring and overall coloration serve as key differentiators.
Key differences and behavior
The White-Spectacled Bulbul and Red-Vented Bulbul display several key behavioral differences. Both species are sociable, yet White-Spectacled Bulbuls often pair with siblings, unlike the Red-Vented, which forms pairs during courtship with elaborate displays, including food offerings. In habitat preference, White-Spectacled Bulbuls inhabit savannas and farmlands in the Middle East and North Africa, while Red-Vented Bulbuls thrive in tropical South and Southeast Asia and adapt well to urban areas globally. Diets overlap with both consuming fruits, nectar, and insects, but Red-Vented Bulbuls are notably adaptable, even at feeders, due to their invasive tendencies. Both species nest in low trees or shrubs, but White-Spectacled Bulbuls emphasize privacy in gardens, and Red-Vented embrace proximity to humans. These behavioral traits can assist birdwatchers in distinguishing the two species in the field.
