Streak-Eared Bulbul

Red-Vented Bulbul

Pycnonotus cafer

General appearance

The Red-vented Bulbul is a member of the bulbul family of passerines. It is easily identified by its short crest on the head and a characteristic red colour patch on the vent. They are generally around 20cm in length. Their body is primarily black with dark brown mixed in. The head, throat, and crests are black, while the middle of the belly is white.

Male vs female

Males and females appear largely similar with little sexual dimorphism. Both genders flaunt the white belly and red vent patches. Females are slightly smaller and duller than males. It is challenging to distinguish them based on appearance alone.

Juvenile

Juvenile Red-vented bulbuls resemble adults but have less distinctly colored vent patches. Their upper parts are brownish while the belly and under tail coverts are often tinged rust-brown. The head, crest, and throat are not as starkly black, but instead exhibit a mix of browns. Juveniles attain the mature plumage in about one year.

How to tell the Red-Vented Bulbul from the Streak-Eared Bulbul

Visual differences

The Red-Vented Bulbul (7.9-9 inches, 1.1-2.1 oz) has a black head and throat with a short crest, and a distinctive red patch under its tail, contrasting with a predominantly black and dark brown plumage. In contrast, the Streak-Eared Bulbul (7.5-8.3 inches, 1-1.3 oz) features an olive-grey body with pale streaked ear patches and a paler underside. The Red-Vented has more contrasting colors, while the Streak-Eared is overall more uniform with subtle streaking. The beaks of both species are similarly shaped but differ in coloration.

Key differences and behavior

The Red-Vented Bulbul and Streak-Eared Bulbul both thrive in Southeast Asia and adapt well to urban environments. Red-Vented Bulbuls, weighing 1.1-2.1 oz and measuring 7.9-9 inches long, are known for their invasive nature and crop-eating habits due to their intelligence. In contrast, the Streak-Eared Bulbul, slightly lighter at 0.99-1.3 oz and 7.5 inches long, often frequents bird baths and issues alarm calls for predators. Both engage in lively courtship and share nesting duties equally. The Red-Vented Bulbul primarily forages for fruits, nectar, and insects, while the Streak-Eared Bulbul focuses on fruits and insects, sometimes consuming suet cakes. Both adapt to bird feeders but exhibit differing dietary preferences based on their natural habits.
