Here's how to tell the difference
Sombre Tit
Willow Tit
Sombre Tit
Poecile lugubris
General appearance
The sombre tit is a small bird species approximately 14cm in length. Its overall coloration is predominantly a smoky bluish-grey, with a black crown and nape that elongate towards the back. The chest and belly are pale grey, and the bird also features a robust, dark bill and sturdy legs.
Male vs female
Sombre tits show minimal sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females are somewhat similar. Males are typically larger and slightly darker with more black on the head; however, these differences are often difficult to distinguish in the field.
Juvenile
Juvenile sombre tits resemble adults but have lighter plumage with a brownish hue. They also feature less black on the head and a slightly smaller bill. Juvenile plumage gradually darkens and becomes more like adult plumage after the first moult.

Poecile montanus
General appearance
The Willow Tit (Poecile montanus) is a small, plump songbird with a robust body. Its plumage primarily consists of grey, brown, and white shades. The head is capped in glossy black extending to the nape, contrasting sharply with the pale cheeks. The upperparts are brownish-grey while the underparts are white, with sides tinged buff-brown. Its wings and tail boast a darker hue. An essential characteristic is a small black bib under its chin.
Male vs female
There is minimal sexual dimorphism in Willow Tits, making it hard to distinguish males from females by appearance. Both sexes have similar coloration and size. Thus, identification between genders is generally achieved through their distinct vocalizations.
Juvenile
Juvenile Willow Tits resemble the adults, but the glossy black cap is duller and they lack the black bib of mature birds. Additionally, juveniles exhibit a paler plumage with a more yellowish-brown hue. As they age, the coloration gradually darkens, approaching the adult appearance by their first winter.

Visual differences
The Sombre Tit is slightly larger at about 5-6 inches long, with a smoky bluish-grey plumage, pale grey chest, and a dark, robust bill. It has a distinct black crown and nape. In contrast, the Willow Tit is smaller, around 4.3-4.7 inches, with browner upperparts, a glossy black cap, and pale cheeks. Its underparts are white with buff-brown sides and it features a small black bib under the chin. The Sombre Tit is more uniformly colored, whereas the Willow Tit has more contrast in its plumage.
Key differences and behavior
The Sombre Tit and Willow Tit both display distinct behaviors and habitat preferences. Sombre Tits prefer higher altitudes (3,200 to 5,250 feet) in coniferous and deciduous woodlands, thriving in temperate to semi-desert areas. In contrast, Willow Tits favor damp deciduous and mixed forests, especially near water. For nesting, Sombre Tits utilize pre-existing cavities, whereas Willow Tits are adept excavators, carving their own sites in rotten wood. Sombre Tits have elaborate courtship displays, while Willow Tits engage in singing and fluttering flights. Both species share similar diets of insects and seeds, especially at feeders where they favor sunflower seeds and suet. Sombre Tits, however, are slightly heavier (0.53-0.67 oz) compared to Willow Tits (0.28-0.53 oz). Both species exhibit minimal sexual dimorphism, making visual identification challenging, so behavior and habitat are key for differentiation.
