Sombre Tit or Eurasian Blue Tit?
Here's how to tell the difference
Sombre Tit
Eurasian Blue Tit
Sombre Tit
Poecile lugubris
General appearance
The sombre tit is a small bird species approximately 14cm in length. Its overall coloration is predominantly a smoky bluish-grey, with a black crown and nape that elongate towards the back. The chest and belly are pale grey, and the bird also features a robust, dark bill and sturdy legs.
Male vs female
Sombre tits show minimal sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females are somewhat similar. Males are typically larger and slightly darker with more black on the head; however, these differences are often difficult to distinguish in the field.
Juvenile
Juvenile sombre tits resemble adults but have lighter plumage with a brownish hue. They also feature less black on the head and a slightly smaller bill. Juvenile plumage gradually darkens and becomes more like adult plumage after the first moult.

Cyanistes caeruleus
Also known as: Blue Tit
General appearance
The Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) is a small passerine bird known for its vibrant coloration. It features a bright blue crown, wings, and tail, with a yellow underbody and greenish back. Its face is distinctively white with a black eye stripe stretching across each eye. The bib under the beak is also black.
Male vs female
Males and females are similar in appearance, although males often display slightly more vibrant blue and yellow tones. This distinction is subtle and typically requires close observation to detect, making sexing in the field challenging.
Juvenile
Juvenile Eurasian blue tits are generally duller in appearance than adults, with a more muted, greyish-blue plumage. Their cheeks are also yellowish, and the blue on their wings and tails is less vivid. As they mature, their coloration brightens to match adult birds.

Visual differences
The Sombre Tit, measuring 5.5 inches, displays a smoky bluish-grey plumage with a black crown and nape, pale grey chest, and a robust dark bill. In contrast, the 4.3-inch Eurasian Blue Tit features vibrant blue on its crown, wings, and tail, a yellow underbody, a greenish back, white face with a black eye stripe, and a black bib. Blue Tits are smaller at 0.28-0.53 oz, compared to Sombre Tits at 0.53-0.67 oz. The Blue Tit's slender bill also differs from the more robust bill of the Sombre Tit.
Key differences and behavior
The Sombre Tit and Eurasian Blue Tit differ notably in behavior and habitat preferences. The Sombre Tit, located in coniferous and deciduous woodlands in mountainous regions like Southeast Europe and Western Asia, prefers higher altitudes (3,200-5,250 feet) and shows adaptability to semi-desert areas. In contrast, the Eurasian Blue Tit inhabits lower-altitude deciduous and mixed woodlands across Europe, also thriving in urban parks and gardens. Sombre Tits engage in mutual preening during courtship and lay 4-6 eggs. They often excavate nesting cavities. Meanwhile, Eurasian Blue Tits perform visible courtship singing, and lay larger clutches (7-12 eggs), often in nest boxes. Both birds feed primarily on insects but adapt diets seasonally; however, the Sombre Tit's diet leans towards high-protein insects for chick-rearing. At feeders, Sombre Tits favor seeds and suet, while Eurasian Blue Tits are more opportunistic, consuming abundant seeds and human-provided foods.
