Eurasian Collared Dove

Spotted Dove

Spilopelia chinensis

Also known as: Mountain Dove, Pearl-Necked Dove, Lace-Necked Dove, Spotted Turtle-Dove

General appearance

The Spotted Dove is an easily recognizable species. They range in size from 11-12 inches in length. The primary coloration of their plumage is a lovely light grey and pinkish below, with a distinctive black patch covered in white spots at the base of the throat.

Male vs female

Sexual dimorphism, which means observable differences in appearance between males and females, is not strongly present in spotted doves. Both males and females are similar in appearance. However, males may have slightly more vibrant colors and might be a bit larger than females.

Juvenile

Juvenile spotted doves display less vivid colorations than the adults, with a relatively plain, unspotted neck and pale undertail. They also lack the striking neck patch that is seen in adult spotted doves. Their coloration becomes progressively more similar to the adults as they mature.

How to tell the Spotted Dove from the Eurasian Collared Dove

Visual differences

The Spotted Dove measures 11-12 inches, with light grey and pinkish plumage and a distinct black patch with white spots at the base of the throat. In contrast, the Eurasian Collared Dove is slightly larger at 12.5 inches, featuring pale brown plumage with a narrow black neck ring and large white patches on outer tail feathers. The Spotted Dove lacks the black neck ring found in the Eurasian Collared Dove. Both species have similar sizes, but Spotted Doves exhibit more pinkish tones and distinctive throat spots, while Eurasian Collared Doves have a more uniform pale brown coloration.

Key differences and behavior

The Spotted Dove and Eurasian Collared Dove display distinct behaviors. Spotted Doves, found in light woodlands and urban areas of Asia, perform elaborate mating displays with cooing and aerial tricks, while Eurasian Collared Doves, more prevalent in suburbs and farmlands, exhibit simpler bowing displays. Both species build simple twig nests, but Spotted Doves nest on horizontal branches and Eurasian Collared Doves may use manmade structures. Diets are seed-based, with Spotted Doves also consuming insects found on open ground. Conversely, Eurasian Collared Doves incorporate waste grain and show adaptability by eating breadcrumbs at feeders. Both species share incubation and chick-rearing duties, but the Collared Dove tends to have multiple broods annually. Spotted Doves are expanding their range, similar to the adaptable Collared Doves.
