Willow Tit

Crested Tit

Lophophanes cristatus

Also known as: Crested Tit

General appearance

The crested tit, or Lophophanes cristatus, is recognized by its black and white striped head and distinctive erect crest. It has a predominantly grey back and wings, with buff-white underparts. It's a small bird, averaging at around 12cm in length.

Male vs female

Males and females are near-identical in appearance, making it challenging to differentiate between the two. Both have the signature crest, which males may display more prominently during courtship or to show dominance. However, there is no discernible size or coloration difference between the sexes.

Juvenile

Juvenile crested tits are similar in appearance to adults, but with a shorter crest and slightly duller coloration. Their coat may lighten in color as they progress to adulthood, and the distinctive crest may become more pronounced.

How to tell the Crested Tit from the Willow Tit

Visual differences

The Crested Tit is easily identified by its distinctive black and white striped head with an erect crest, whereas the Willow Tit has a glossy black cap without a crest. Crested Tits are predominantly grey with buff-white underparts, while Willow Tits feature brownish-grey upperparts and white underparts, with brown-tinged sides and a small black bib under the chin. Both birds measure about 4.3-4.7 inches in length; however, the Crested Tit's unique "mohawk" makes it visually distinguishable from the Willow Tit's plump, cap-topped appearance.

Key differences and behavior

The Crested Tit and Willow Tit differ in behavior, habitat, and diet. Crested Tits are hyperactive, social, and prefer coniferous forests, particularly around Scots pines, but can adapt to gardens during harsh winters. They store food for later, such as pine seeds and moth larvae. Breeding involves complex courtship with aerial acrobatics, and they nest in tree cavities. They forage insects and seeds and visit feeders for peanuts and suet. In contrast, Willow Tits prefer damp deciduous forests, especially with willow and alder, and also inhabit scrubby areas. They excavate their own nests in rotten wood, forming strong pair bonds. Their diet comprises insects and seeds, favoring birch and alder, and they frequent feeders for sunflower seeds. While both species are agile foragers, Willow Tits have strong territorial calls, helping to distinguish them further.
