Sichuan Tit

Poecile weigoldicus

General appearance

The Sichuan tit (Poecile weigoldicus) is a small bird species that features a distinctive blend of black and white plumage. The upper body is mostly black with a white belly and two white wingbars. Its medium length tail is also black. These titbirds bear a striking black cap and bib which stands out against its lighter colored face.

Male vs female

In the Sichuan tit species, the males and females appear quite similar. Both share the same black and white coloration. The sex of the bird can be determined more accurately during the breeding season when females show less gloss on their black feathers due to wear and tear, while male plumage remains glossier.

Juvenile

Juvenile Sichuan tits have more subdued coloration compared to adults, appearing somewhat greyer. As they mature, their plumage will darken to the distinctive black and white pattern over time. Their caps can also be slightly brownish and the bib may be less defined. Observing these transition in coloration can help to distinguish juvenile Sichuan tits from adults.

How to tell the Sichuan Tit from the Willow Tit

Visual differences

The Sichuan Tit and Willow Tit are similar in size, both about 4.3 to 4.7 inches in length and weigh 0.3 to 0.5 ounces. Visually, the Sichuan Tit features prominent black and white plumage with a distinct black cap and bib, alongside two white wingbars, set against a mostly black upper body and a white belly. In contrast, the Willow Tit displays a blend of grey, brown, and white with a glossy black cap extending to the nape, pale cheeks, buff-brown tinged sides, and a small black bib, lacking the Sichuan Tit's prominent wingbars.

Key differences and behavior

Sichuan Tits and Willow Tits display notable behavioral distinctions. Sichuan Tits, found in temperate forests of central China at elevations up to 11,000 feet, are highly social and often join mixed-species flocks, showing active acrobatics while foraging. They're non-migratory and have elaborate courtship displays. Their diet includes insects and berries, and they readily visit feeders for seeds and suet. In contrast, Willow Tits inhabit damp forests across Europe and Asia, preferring to stay in pairs after forming bonds in late winter. They excavate nests in rotten wood and focus more on insects and seeds, particularly in colder weather. Both species use similar materials for nest construction but exhibit variations in nesting preferences and foraging behavior.
