Common Myna or Common Blackbird?
Here's how to tell the difference
Common Myna
Common Blackbird
Common Myna
Acridotheres tristis
Also known as: Indian Myna
General appearance
The common myna is a chunky bird of about 23-26 cm long, about the size of a robin. It has a short square-tipped tail, a yellow bill and bare yellow facial skin. The bird is dark brown in color with a black hood. It has rounded wings with white underparts and a white-tipped tail - both become very visible during flight.
Male vs female
It's challenging to determine sex visually as there is no marked dimorphism between males and females common mynas. Both sport similar plumage making it tough to discern sex by just looking at them.
Juvenile
Juvenile common mynas typically display similar physical traits and coloration to adults but may be slightly less vibrant in color. As they age, these colors will deepen, and the distinctive black hood will become more pronounced.

Turdus merula
Also known as: Eurasian Blackbird
General appearance
The common blackbird is medium-sized, measuring approximately 23-29 cm in length. They have slender bodies, long tails, and are known for their distinctive melodious songs. Their eyes are highlighted with a bright yellow ring, and they possess a sharp, pointed beak.
Male vs female
Males are predominantly jet black with a vivid orange-yellow beak, contributing to their striking appearance. Females, however, are brown with streaky plumage and a duller beak, serving as a form of camouflage during nesting. Both exhibit the characteristic yellow eye-ring, though it's more prominent in males.
Juvenile
Juvenile blackbirds have brownish plumage, often with speckled or mottled patterns, aiding in their camouflage. Unlike adults, they lack a yellow eye-ring and their beak is darker. As they mature, they'll gradually attain adult coloration. Observing them in woodlands or gardens, particularly in spring and summer, is easier when they are most active.

Visual differences
The Common Myna is a chunky bird, about 9-10 inches long, with a dark brown body, black hood, yellow bill, and prominent yellow facial skin. Its wings and tail display white patches visible in flight. The Common Blackbird, measuring 9-11.5 inches, is slender with a long tail. Males are jet black with a vivid orange-yellow beak and a bright yellow eye-ring, while females are brown with streaky plumage. The Myna's tail is square-tipped, whereas the Blackbird's is longer, aiding in differentiation.
Key differences and behavior
Common Mynas and Common Blackbirds, although similarly adaptable to diverse habitats, exhibit distinct behaviors. Mynas thrive around human habitations globally, exploiting urban areas for food, while Blackbirds prefer woodlands and gardens across Europe and Asia. During courtship, Mynas vocalize and dance, whereas Blackbirds sing melodiously and visually display. Both species build nests low in shrubs or trees, with Mynas using more diverse materials and Blackbirds employing mud for reinforcement. Mynas are opportunists, consuming insects, fruits, and food scraps, while Blackbirds focus on ground foraging for earthworms and insects, occasionally visiting feeders for fruit and seeds. Both species form monogamous bonds, but Mynas' strong pair bonding involves frequent mutual preening, contrasting with Blackbirds' singing and feeding behaviors.
