Pygmy Nuthatch

Red-Breasted Nuthatch

Sitta canadensis

General appearance

The Red-breasted Nuthatch is roughly the size of a Sparrow and is best identified by its black eye stripe, white eyebrow, and head-down nuthatch behavior. It features a buffy orange belly and distinctive blue-gray back. The bird's wings and tail are rounded, with the tail being short and square-tipped.

Male vs female

In terms of physical traits, males and females are largely similar. Both sexes feature the same rounded shape, black, gray, orange, red, and white coloration. However, in terms of color intensity, females may appear somewhat paler compared to the brightly colored males.

Juvenile

Juvenile Red-breasted Nuthatches are similar in shape to adults. Their coloration tends to be duller than adults, with less pronounced black, gray, and orange tones. As they mature, their colors deepen, more closely resembling the adults' vibrant hues.

How to tell the Red-Breasted Nuthatch from the Pygmy Nuthatch

Visual differences

The Red-Breasted Nuthatch, about 4-4.7 inches long, features a distinctive black eye stripe and white eyebrow, with a buffy orange belly and blue-gray back. It has a rounded tail and short, square-tipped wings. The Pygmy Nuthatch is smaller, around 4 inches, with a grayish-blue upper body and contrasting dark gray cap. Its underbelly is buffy-white, and it has a sharp, pointed beak. The Red-Breasted Nuthatch displays more striking orange and black hues, while the Pygmy Nuthatch is subtler with gray tones.

Key differences and behavior

The Red-Breasted Nuthatch and Pygmy Nuthatch exhibit distinct behaviors and habitat preferences that aid field identification. Red-Breasted Nuthatches (4-5 inches) create "booby traps" with sticky resin at their nest entrances, nesting in mature conifer forests, and adapt their diet seasonally, consuming insects in summer and conifer seeds in winter. In contrast, the smaller Pygmy Nuthatch (3.5-4 inches) showcases communal living, with up to 100 birds roosting together for warmth and participating in cooperative breeding with "helper" birds. They favor Yellow Pine regions and have a similar diet shift, from insects in summer to pine seeds in winter. Unlike Red-Breasted, Pygmy Nuthatches do not tolerate other nuthatches near their nesting sites but do allow bluebirds and swallows. Both species frequent bird feeders, enjoying seeds and suet to supplement their diets.
