Light-Vented Bulbul or Red-Whiskered Bulbul?
Here's how to tell the difference
Light-Vented Bulbul
Red-Whiskered Bulbul
Light-Vented Bulbul
Pycnonotus sinensis
Also known as: Chinese Bulbul
General appearance
The light-vented bulbul is a medium-sized bird, ranging from 18 to 22 cm long. The species is characterized by a brownish color on their upper body parts while their belly is white. Notable is its black-colored head with a distinct tuft which resembles a crest on its crown and white rings around the eyes.
Male vs female
In terms of sex differentiation, it's challenging as both sexes almost look alike. However, upon closer examination, males may appear slightly larger and have a more pronounced crest compared to females. No seasonal variations in their appearance have been noted; they maintain their coloration all year round.
Juvenile
Juveniles are quite similar in appearance to the adults but are generally duller, with a less defined crest and a murkier shade of brown. Their belly is greyer than the stark white in adults, and the white eye ring is less prominent. Over time, they mature into their distinct adult coloration.

Pycnonotus jocosus
Also known as: Crested Bulbul
General appearance
The Red-whiskered bulbul is a distinctive bird approximately 20cm in size, about the size of a Robin. It exhibits broad, rounded wings, and its tail can be notched, rounded or square-tipped. Most noticeable are its black crest, and a pair of red and white 'whiskers' or patches on the cheeks. The bird primarily showcases a black, brown, grey and white color palette, with red undertail coverts.
Male vs female
Male and female Red-whiskered bulbuls are similar in appearance, with both sexes displaying the same coloration and patterns. Hence, visually, it might be challenging to distinguish between males and females.
Juvenile
Juvenile Red-whiskered bulbuls resemble the adults in size but have less prominent 'whiskers' and their coloration is generally more subdued. The red undertail coverts may not be as vibrant as in adults. Their crest is less developed, giving them a more rounded appearance.

Visual differences
The Light-Vented Bulbul, typically 7-8.7 inches long, features a brown upper body, white belly, black head crest, and eye rings. In contrast, the Red-Whiskered Bulbul, around 7.9 inches, sports a black crest, distinct red and white cheek patches, and red undertail coverts. While both have black and white in their plumage, the red-whiskered’s cheek patches and undertail add vibrant contrast. Both species have similar-sized crests, though the Light-Vented Bulbul's may be less vivid. Beak shapes are similar as bulbul species, but the red-whiskered bird's marks aid easy differentiation.
Key differences and behavior
The Light-Vented Bulbul and Red-Whiskered Bulbul exhibit distinct behavioral traits. Both species are sociable, but the Light-Vented Bulbul is more fearless around humans, often nesting in urban areas and even on apartment verandas. In contrast, the Red-Whiskered Bulbul is more elusive, frequently heard rather than seen, though it enjoys urban gardens. Breeding involves vocal displays for the Light-Vented and subtle wing-fluttering for the Red-Whiskered. The Light-Vented Bulbul’s diet includes fruits, insects, and occasionally small reptiles, while the Red-Whiskered Bulbul mainly consumes berries and small fruits. Both share parental duties, but the Light-Vented exhibits a more visible courtship involving plumage.
