Red-Whiskered Bulbul

Sooty-Headed Bulbul

Pycnonotus aurigaster

General appearance

The Sooty-Headed Bulbul is a medium-sized bird, approximately 20 cm in length. The principal characteristic of the specie is its black-colored head, leading towards the nape. The color gradually transforms into a smoky grey down the back, while the underparts, including the chest, belly, and undertail, are creamy-white. The specie has a pointed black crest, a conspicuous white iris around the eyes, and stout, medium length, black bill. There are no distinct seasonal variations in the appearance.

Male vs female

Both males and females look almost identical, making it particularly challenging to distinguish them. Both sexes share the identical characteristic blacks, grays, and whites coloring. The voice might be helpful in distinguishing between the sexes, as typically males have a louder and more varied song than females.

Juvenile

Juvenile Sooty-Headed Bulbuls are discernable thanks to their more muted coloring. They exhibit duller hues, lacking the sharp contrast between the black, grey and white seen in adults. They don’t have the pointy crest feature until they attain maturity. Their iris is brownish as compared to the stark white in adults.

How to tell the Sooty-Headed Bulbul from the Red-Whiskered Bulbul

Visual differences

The Sooty-Headed Bulbul and Red-Whiskered Bulbul are both around 8 inches in length. Visually, the Sooty-Headed has a black head and crest, smoky grey back, and creamy-white underparts with a white iris. Additionally, the Red-Whiskered displays a mix of black, brown, and grey tones and often appears more varied in color with a rounded or notched tail compared to the Sooty-Headed's simpler palette and pointed crest.

Key differences and behavior

The Sooty-Headed Bulbul and Red-Whiskered Bulbul exhibit notable behavioral differences. Sooty-Headed Bulbuls, commonly found in towns, are social and often seen in pairs or small groups, favoring tropical lowland forests and gardens. Their courtship involves active calls and aerial displays. Their diet leans heavily on fruits and insects, particularly during breeding for protein. In contrast, Red-Whiskered Bulbuls, often heard more than seen, inhabit suburban areas with exotic fruiting trees. Their courtship is more subtle, involving crest movements. They are opportunistic feeders, eating berries, small fruits, nectar, and insects. Both birds share some nesting habits, using dense foliage, yet Red-Whiskered Bulbuls may use urban materials for camouflage. Sooty-Headed Bulbuls are slightly heavier (1.4-1.8 oz) versus Red-Whiskered Bulbuls (0.8-1.1 oz). Both are adaptive, yet differ in habitats and diet flexibility.
