Middle Spotted Woodpecker

Syrian Woodpecker

Dendrocopos syriacus

General appearance

Syrian woodpeckers have domed heads, strong bills, and sturdy bodies, typically with white undersides and black upper-parts. They have characteristic woodpecker 'moustaches' and white cheek patches. Their distinctive wing pattern features large white patches, visible during flight. Seasonal variations in appearance are insignificant.

Male vs female

Male Syrian woodpeckers stand out with their red crown and nape that females lack. However, both sexes share the white forehead and large black eyepatch extended towards the nape, creating a hooded appearance.

Juvenile

Juveniles share the general color pattern of adults but they have duller plumage. Juvenile males can be spotted by a faint red patch on the crown which becomes brighter as they mature.

How to tell the Syrian Woodpecker from the Middle Spotted Woodpecker

Visual differences

The Syrian Woodpecker (8.7-9.1 inches, 1.9-2.9 ounces) features black upper parts with white patches and a distinctive red crown and nape in males. In contrast, the Middle Spotted Woodpecker (7.9-8.7 inches, 2.1-2.8 ounces) has brownish-green upper parts with abundant streaks and a red crest in both sexes. The Syrian boasts a strong bill, while the Middle Spotted is sleeker, aiding camouflage. Their chest patterns differ: the Syrian has more solid white undersides, while the Middle Spotted is streaked. The Syrian's white cheek patches enhance its contrasting appearance.

Key differences and behavior

The Syrian Woodpecker and Middle Spotted Woodpecker exhibit distinct behaviors. Syrian Woodpeckers, weighing 1.9-2.9 oz and measuring 8.7-9 in, are more adaptable, residing in urban parks and deciduous forests from Southeastern Europe to Iran. They engage in cooperative breeding, with pairs heavily involved in nesting and chick-rearing. In contrast, the Middle Spotted Woodpecker, slightly smaller at 2.1-2.8 oz and 7.9-8.7 in, thrives in old oak forests across Europe and shows high activity, often spotted vocalizing rather than drumming. Both species share a similar insect-based diet, yet the Middle Spotted occasionally eats lizards. While Syrian Woodpeckers visit feeders frequently, the Middle Spotted is rarer but may be attracted by placing feeders near trees. Both utilize decaying wood for nesting, albeit the Middle Spotted frequently engages in aerial courtship displays.
