Peaceful Dove

Geopelia placida

General appearance

The Peaceful Dove is a small grey-white bird with a blue-grey hued chest, a long and slender bill, and characteristic spotted black and white wings. Measuring around 20-24 cm in length, it showcases pink legs, a buff white belly and a distinctive two-part cooing sound that separates it from other dove species.

Male vs female

There is little sexual dimorphism in the Peaceful Dove; males and females share similar physical characteristics. Both sexes have a striking black line with white borders around their neck. However, during courtship, the male flaunts abnormal upright display, with the neck stretched height, revealing its expanded glossy chest.

Juvenile

Juveniles are nearly identical to adult Peaceful Doves but are a duller version of the adults. The characteristic spots on their wings are also less defined compared to the adults. Over time, they develop adult-like appearance as their plumage matures.

How to tell the Peaceful Dove from the Zebra Dove

Visual differences

The Peaceful Dove (7.9-9.4 in, 1.4-2.3 oz) features a grey-white body with spotted black and white wings, blue-grey chest, and a slender bill. It has a distinctive black neck line bordered in white and pink legs. The Zebra Dove (7.9-8.7 in, 1.8-2.5 oz) exhibits black and white barring on its neck and upper breast resembling zebra stripes. It has a brown-grey body with a pinkish chest, a thin white eye ring, and a black line from beak to eyes, with long, slim wings and a pointed tail.

Key differences and behavior

The Peaceful Dove (Geopelia placida) and Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata) share similar habitats, favoring open woodlands and urban environments, but differ in their behavioral traits. Peaceful Doves are more conspicuous during their breeding season, becoming territorial and aggressive, whereas Zebra Doves are notable for their elaborate courtship, with males performing roles like feeding females to build bonds. Both species are social, often seen in pairs or flocks, but Zebra Doves display exceptional camouflage. Diets are similar, consisting mainly of seeds and grains, with occasional insects, though Zebra Doves may also consume snails. Nesting habits are alike, with both constructing simple platform nests and sharing incubation duties. However, Peaceful Doves may select more varied locations, including gardens. Despite overlapping in some regions, their courtship displays, territorial behaviors, and adaptations to surroundings offer key distinctions in the field. Both are approximately 8-9 inches long, with Peaceful Doves weighing 1.4-2.3 oz and Zebra Doves slightly heavier at 1.8-2.5 oz.
