European Goldfinch

Carduelis carduelis

Also known as: Goldfinch

General appearance

The European Goldfinch is a small bird with a striking coloration. It has a red face and a black and white head. The back is brown, and the wings are black with brilliant yellow bars. The belly is white, and the beak is long, sharp and suited for seed extraction.

Male vs female

Both sexes of European Goldfinches have similar plumage, making them challenging to tell apart merely by looking. Both genders sport red faces, black and white heads, bright yellow wing bars, and white bellies. However, males may have slightly wider red faces.

Juvenile

Juvenile European Goldfinches do not have the adult's distinctive red, black and white head pattern. Instead, they have a more uniform grey-brown head and body coloration. Their wings, however, do feature the vivid yellow bar, giving a hint to their adult plumage.

How to tell the European Goldfinch from the Lawrence’s Goldfinch

Visual differences

The European Goldfinch is slightly larger, weighing 0.5-0.8 oz and measuring 4.1-5.3 inches, with a distinctive red face, black and white head, and bright yellow wing bars. In contrast, Lawrence's Goldfinch is smaller, weighing 0.3-0.5 oz and measuring 3.9-4.7 inches, featuring gray plumage with bright yellow on the wings, chest, and rump, and a black forehead and throat. European Goldfinches have brown backs and long, sharp beaks, while Lawrence's have black and white wing and tail patterns with no red on the face.

Key differences and behavior

European Goldfinches and Lawrence's Goldfinches exhibit distinct behavioral differences. European Goldfinches are sociable and often form large groups, favoring open lowlands and suburban areas. They boast vibrant courtship displays and build nests in gardens if conditions are right. Their diet is seed-focused, with occasional insects during breeding seasons, and they frequent feeders with sunflower seeds and millet. In contrast, Lawrence's Goldfinches are nomadic, frequenting varied habitats near water, like oak and pine woods. They have a less aggressive mating ritual with males singing and closely following females, yet lack strong territorial defense. Their diet primarily includes native plant seeds, and they may feed on salt. Nests are made higher in trees, and while these goldfinches can visit seed feeders, they prefer natural diets. European Goldfinches are heavier (0.5-0.8 oz) than Lawrence's Goldfinches (0.3-0.5 oz).
