Saffron Finch or Yellowhammer?
Here's how to tell the difference
Saffron Finch
Yellowhammer
Saffron Finch
Sicalis flaveola
General appearance
Saffron finches have a bright yellow coloring that distinguishes them from other birds. Notably, they possess a striking yellow-greenish hue on their wings and tail, and their beaks are coloured light orange. Their entire body is adorned with saffron hues, living up to their name. Size-wise, they are relatively small, typically ranging between 13 to 15 cm.
Male vs female
The males are more vibrant in color than the females, their yellow being strong and bright, often with vague streaks of black on the back. On the other hand, female saffron finches are typically paler, with an almost greenish-yellow upper part. Moreover, the females also have brown streaks on their belly.
Juvenile
Juvenile saffron finches have a dull yellow coloration and blend in more effectively with their surroundings than the adults. They are characterized by their faintly streaked underparts and lack the black markings on the upper parts, characteristic of adult males. Their appearance undergoes significant changes as they mature into adults and their colour brightens becoming more vibrant.

Visual differences
The Saffron Finch is smaller, about 5.3-5.9 inches (13.5-15 cm), with bright yellow plumage featuring a yellow-greenish tinge on wings and tail and a light orange beak. Male Yellowhammers, at 6.3-6.7 inches (16-17 cm), have a bright yellow head, chest, and belly with a reddish-brown back and sparrow-like brown streaks on wings. Yellowhammer females and juveniles are less vivid, with subdued yellow hues and more brown streaks than Saffron Finches. Saffron Finches have a consistent saffron hue, while Yellowhammers display distinct head and back color contrast.
Key differences and behavior
The Saffron Finch and Yellowhammer exhibit distinct behaviors and habitat preferences. Saffron Finches thrive in warm, tropical South American regions and adapt well to urban areas, often nesting in man-made structures. In contrast, Yellowhammers are found in hedgerows and farmland across Europe and Asia, favoring open countryside with bushes. Saffron Finches engage in lively courtship displays with aerial acrobatics, while Yellowhammers sing from prominent perches to attract mates. Both species build nests from grasses but differ in location, with Yellowhammers nesting close to the ground. Diet-wise, both birds consume seeds and insects. However, Saffron Finches favor grasses, whereas Yellowhammers rely on ground-found seeds and grains, especially in winter. Both species visit feeders, eating seeds and insects, but Yellowhammers may also enjoy fat balls and cracked corn. Both exhibit attentive parenting, sharing chick-rearing duties.
