Brassy-Breasted Tanager

Tanager

Tangara, Stilpnia, Thraupis

General appearance

Tanager is a bird distinguished for its vibrant coloration, inclusive of shades such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and black. Their size ranges between 11cm to 20cm. The build is often compact, with stout bills and short wings. The Tanagers can be identified in wild by their striking colors and diverse vocalizations.

Male vs female

Males generally exhibit more striking and brighter colors than female tanagers. They often have deep red, blue, or yellow hues, whereas females lean more towards green or yellow-green and might sometimes appear more subdued. Further, some species show little to no difference in coloration between genders. Seasonal variations also exist, where the male's vibrant colors fade after the breeding period.

Juvenile

Juvenile tanagers typically wear modest plumage compared to adults. They usually share similarity with adult females in coloration, yet vary across species. In some species, juvenile males develop adult male coloration in gradual stages during months or years.

How to tell the Tanager from the Brassy-Breasted Tanager

Visual differences

The Tanager (Tangara, Stilpnia, Thraupis) varies in color, size (4.3-7.9 inches), and weight (1.6 oz), showcasing a spectrum of reds, blues, and greens with compact builds and stout bills. The Brassy-Breasted Tanager (Tangara desmaresti) is distinct with its medium size (5.1-5.5 inches), lighter weight (0.7-0.8 oz), bright green back, golden-orange throat, and yellowish-green belly, accented by black-blue wings and tail. The Brassy-Breasted Tanager is characterized by a more consistent and specific color pattern, while Tanagers offer broader color variety.

Key differences and behavior

The Tanager (Tangara, Stilpnia, Thraupis) and Brassy-Breasted Tanager (Tangara desmaresti) exhibit several behavioral differences. Tanagers are versatile, inhabiting diverse Neotropical settings from dense forests to rural towns, whereas Brassy-Breasted Tanagers prefer southeastern Brazil's montane forests. Both species enjoy vibrant courtship displays, but Tanagers are known for nesting in unconventional areas, such as towns, which contrasts with the Brassy-Breasted's preference for dense vegetation. Tanagers forage for a varied diet of fruits, insects, and nectar, with some species venturing to feeders for additional sustenance, whereas Brassy-Breasted Tanagers focus more on fruits and insects in their forested habitats. Both species support their chicks together, but Tanagers often lay up to 4 eggs compared to Brassy-Breasted's typical 2-3 eggs. Additionally, Tanagers are generally heavier (1.6 oz) than the smaller Brassy-Breasted Tanagers (0.7-0.76 oz).
