How to tell the Blue-Winged Mountain Tanager from the Brassy-Breasted Tanager

Visual differences

The Blue-Winged Mountain Tanager (6.3-6.7 in, 1.2-2.0 oz) and Brassy-Breasted Tanager (5.1-5.5 in, 0.7-0.8 oz) differ visually. The Blue-Winged has bright golden-yellow on the chest and belly with turquoise-blue wings and head, plus a black mask, whereas the Brassy-Breasted boasts a vibrant green back, golden-orange throat, and upper chest. It has darker wings and tail with black and blue hues. The Blue-Winged appears larger and more strikingly colored, while the Brassy-Breasted shows lighter yellowish-green on the belly. Both species share some blue, but in varying intensities and locations.

Key differences and behavior

The Blue-Winged Mountain Tanager and Brassy-Breasted Tanager both exhibit social foraging but differ in group dynamics; the former is quieter and forms mixed-species flocks, while the latter is lively and stays in single-species groups. The Blue-Winged prefers the higher altitudes of the Andes, whereas the Brassy-Breasted inhabits southeastern Brazil's subtropical montane forests. Both engage in vibrant courtship displays and share similar nesting and feeding habits, such as constructing cup-shaped nests and consuming insects and fruit. However, the Blue-Winged weighs more (1.2-2 oz) compared to the Brassy-Breasted (0.67-0.76 oz), and the Brassy-Breasted is known for its agility, constantly moving in search of food. Though they both frequent bird feeders, their habitat preferences and social behaviors aid in distinguishing them in the field.
