Though they are, at first, barely heavier than an apple, it doesn't take long for them to transform into their tall lanky selves. Their long neck is the secret behind their loud trumpeting call. And their dance moves? That is just pure talent! Just don't get on their bad side: they have a fearsomely powerful kick.

The sandhill crane can weigh between 3340to5428grams and be from100to120centimeters tall.

A typical sandhill crane can live up to 20 years in the wild, although some have been recorded to live over 30 years. This is a long lifespan in comparison to other crane species, such as the whooping crane, which live up to 24 years. Their longevity can be attributed to their fewer natural predators and limited human interference in their habitats.
